Recognizing Signs of Oral Pathology
A healthy mouth should have a smooth, coral-pink lining. Any persistent changes may indicate an underlying condition such as oral cancer or a systemic disease. Red flags to look out for:
- • White patches (leukoplakia) or red patches (erythroplakia)
- • Sores that bleed easily or do not heal within two weeks
- • Lumps, thickening, or ulcerations in the mouth or lips
- • Chronic sore throat, hoarseness, or voice changes
- • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking
These changes can appear on the tongue, cheeks, lips, palate, gums, or throat. Pain may not always be present, which makes regular screening essential.
